“None of us can escape the history of our people. We should not and must not “let the past rest”, otherwise it might be resurrected and become the new present.” - Jean Améry

Historic recurrence is the repetition of similar events in history. Tourists and schoolchildren visit the battlefields of the Western Front in France and Belgium. Memorials to those who fought for their land to be free of invaders. Ukraine fights for those same freedoms. The same bloody cost. In trenches, on frontlines that echo our shared histories. The last hundred years of rain and wind has softened the edges of the trenches in Verdun. But the stories of unimaginable suffering remain.

The First World War was so brutal near Verdun, that when the war ended in 1918 it was decided they could never clear the bodies or unexploded shells, so they turned it into a forest. None as ‘Zone Rouge’ more than 1,200 square kilometres, was deemed too physically and environmentally damaged by conflict for human habitation. Many parts of it you still can’t enter. 300,000 French and German soldiers died in the battle of Verdun. Most of their bodies still lie in these woods.
